Screen-Free Activities for Adults
Why is it Important to Unplug?
As we all know, screens have become a huge part of our lives. They offer convenience, entertainment, and access to endless information. However, this constant digital connection comes with some disadvantages. It sneakily drains our time, energy, and focus. Research even shows that extended screen use has been linked to boredom, social disconnection, and a decline in mental well-being.
This is why unplugging is more important than ever. While screens offer some benefits, it’s essential to create a healthy balance. When we step away from our devices, we give ourselves a chance to reset. We open ourselves up to greater creativity, stronger relationships, and sharper focus. This balance creates an opportunity for our minds to wander, rediscover simple pleasures, and fully engage with the real world. That being said, it’s time to reclaim your time and rediscover what truly makes you feel fulfilled.
Adventurous Screen-Free Activities
If the word “routine” makes you cringe, it’s time to add some excitement into your life. This category is all about stepping outside your comfort zone and tapping into your adventurous side!
- Escape Rooms: I’m a huge fan of escape rooms! If you’ve never heard of them, you basically work with friends (or strangers) to solve clues and riddles within a time limit to “escape” a themed room.
- Rock Climbing (Indoor/Outdoor): Rock climbing is a great way to test your strength and mental focus. Whether you’re scaling an indoor wall or climbing a real rock face (always do so safely!), it provides an incredible feeling of accomplishment.
- Learn to Parkour: This one is a little bit out there but will be perfect for you if you enjoy a challenge. This discipline is all about fluidly navigating your environment with jumps, climbs, and creative movement.
- Try a Unique Sport: Ditch the usual gym routine and discover a world of quirky sports! Think pickleball, underwater hockey, disc golf, or something even more unusual.
- Go Foraging: Connect with nature and learn a super useful skill! With proper knowledge, you can ethically gather edible plants, mushrooms, and berries from your local environment.
- Try Orienteering: Using a map and a compass, your goal is to find a series of checkpoints located in a natural area, like a forest or park. It’s a great way to develop map-reading skills and experience a different type of hike

Forget the ordinary – let’s dive into the weird, the wonderful, and the unexpectedly awesome! These activities will encourage you to embrace the offbeat and see your world through a new lens.
- Visit an Oddity Museum: One of my favorite “odd museums” is Meow Wolf, and if you are lucky enough to live in a city or visit a city with one, you must check it out! Think Ripley’s Believe It or Not! but even weirder.
- Take a Ghost Tour: I’m a huge fan of horror and most things spooky! If you are as well and your city has a haunted history, go on a ghost tour. They are a fun way to hear the eerie local legends and even try to spot paranormal activity.
- Urban Exploration (respectfully): Ever wonder what’s behind those abandoned buildings or hidden corners of your city? If done with caution, legal permissions, and safety in mind, urban exploration can be a really cool experience.
- Attend a Unique Festival: Forget the usual music festivals – think cheese rolling, wife-carrying championships, or celebrations dedicated entirely to sauerkraut.

- Silent Disco: If you like dancing but traditional clubs aren’t your thing, this is for you! Everyone wears headphones playing different music channels and dances to whatever they’re listening to. I’ve been to a couple and they were so much fun!
Creative Screen-Free Activities
Forget about perfection and unleash your inner artist! These activities are designed to awaken your creative spirit and show you that everyone has the capacity for expression.
- Intuitive Art: Turn off your inner critic and let loose! Grab some paint, clay, or any materials that call to you, and simply create something without judgment. Focus on enjoying the process, not the final product. I’ve recently been introduced to “Diamond Painting” which is a fun and unique twist on traditional paint-by-number kits, so this could be an option for you as well!
- Sound Bath Experience: Relax and let the vibrations of the instruments wash over you – sound baths are a unique meditative experience designed to nurture your mind and body.
- Create “Found-Object” Art: Turn everyday objects into something new! Look through your home, a thrift store, or outside for interesting items and transform them into a unique sculpture or assemblage.
- Try Abstract Photography: Instead of focusing on realistic scenes, try capturing patterns, textures, and colors. You might be surprised by the beautiful and unexpected compositions you find.
