- Acknowledgment: Recognize your suffering with a simple statement such as “This is a moment of pain.” This prompts you to step back, observe, and validate your feelings rather than brushing them under the carpet.
- Common humanity: Remember the shared human experience of suffering. Telling yourself “Suffering is a part of the shared human experience.” will assure you that you’re not alone in pain and it is a part of everybody’s life.
- Self-Kindness: Lastly, be good to yourself by saying something like, “May I be kind to myself in this moment.” This reminds you that it’s okay to soothe yourself and seek comfort during tough times.
Here’s a real-life example of how you could internalize this during a challenging phase: “I’m facing a tough time right now, but I’m not alone. Others have faced similar obstacles. I deserve kindness and comfort.”

I know it sounds super weird, and it will likely trigger resistance initially, but that’s completely normal. You can get past the awkwardness by beginning with simple statements like, “I am enough.”, “I am deserving of love and respect.”, and “I am proud of the person I am evolving into.” (Pro tip: I’ve found that this also helps a lot if you deal with pre-interview anxiety.)
As you get more comfortable, you can introduce more complex affirmations, making them more personal and unique to you.
