I still catch myself slipping into this type of thinking sometimes and have to remind myself that every single person faces emotional pain and challenges at some point. While you’re on this journey to heal yourself, you might sometimes find your mind racing with thoughts of worry and regret. It’s easy to feel hijacked by those worries or swept up in a spiral of past regrets. This is where mindfulness steps in. It teaches you to observe your thoughts and emotions with a little more space.
Meditation is a great way to practice mindfulness. Even just 5-10 minutes each day can make a huge difference! I had a very difficult time meditating when I first started. My mind would wander, or I’d get fidgety. If you find yourself struggling too, don’t give up! Try a guided meditation – having someone to guide your focus can be a huge help, especially at the beginning.
Self-Compassion
Sometimes the harshest voice we hear is our own. If you struggle with self-criticism, it’s time to start practicing self-compassion. This concept focuses on speaking to yourself like you would a close friend. There are tons of different therapy types (like talk therapy, CBT, etc.), so you should find what works best for you. One thing I was surprised to discover when I started my own journey toward healing is how deeply your physical well-being impacts your emotions, and vice versa. When you move your body regularly, it releases feel-good chemicals that reduce stress, improve your mood, and boost self-esteem.
I know it can be hard to not think of exercise as a chore, but trust me, it’s worth finding activities you enjoy. This could be dancing, swimming, hiking, or any other activity that makes you want to move. Start small and gradually build up. The most important thing is consistency, so aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.
Personally, I try to walk most mornings for 30 minutes. It’s a great way to clear my head and start the day feeling energized. I also squeeze in a group fitness class or weightlifting session at least 3 times a week. I’ll be honest, I’m not a gym rat AT ALL, and some days are harder than others. But the positive impact on my mental well-being is undeniable.
Nourishing Your Mind & Body
The food you eat also has a huge impact on how you feel. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats nourishes your brain and helps stabilize your mood. On the flip side, too much processed food, sugar, and unhealthy fats can leave you feeling sluggish, irritable, and more prone to anxiety and depression.
I get it – finding the time and energy to eat healthily can be a major challenge, especially after a long day. Like many people, I used to fall into the takeout trap way too often. But recently I started dedicating some time on the weekends to meal prepping. It’s made a massive difference! Having healthy meals ready to go makes it much less tempting to reach for convenience foods when I’m tired or stressed.
Focus on eating whole, unprocessed foods as often as possible. Notice how different foods make you feel, and choose the ones that give you energy and mental clarity. Don’t beat yourself up about occasional treats, but make mindful, nourishing choices the foundation of your diet.
